Objectives of the Projects implemented by the Rural Development Division.

  • Poverty alleviation, Policy formulation and implementation of programs and projects for Rural and Regional Economic Development.
  • Implementation of Community based Livelihood Development Programs.

Village Uplifting Program - 2015 (Gama Neguma)

Village Uplifting Program initiated by the Ministry of Housing and Samurdhi in line with the 100 days Special Development Program of the new government is implemented with the objectives of developing the infrastructure facilities in the rural areas and livelihood development for poverty alleviation of the rural community. Development projects are being implemented at village level in 14,022 Grama Niladari Divisions giving all island coverage.

Identification of the projects has been done based on the genuine requirement of the rural community with the target of improving their Social and Economic Development. Further, Community Participation is entertained in Project Identification, Planning, Implementation, Monitoring, Post Evaluation, Management and Maintenance. Through this process, community participation is directly obtained for decision making in implementation of the government Policy. Recommendations are obtained from a Rural Committee comprising religious leaders, representatives of active community based organizations, Public Representatives and field officers for the identified projects at village level. Thus, the recommending the projects in priority basis are one of the main tasks of the Rural Committee.

The significance of this program is conferring priority for the villages in the Grama Niladari Divisions which were not benefited from the development programs implemented previously. Under the village uplifting program one million has been allocated for each Grama Niladari Division. Respective Divisional Secretary is responsible for implementing the projects in Grama Niladari Divisions while the relevant District Secretary is responsible for the supervision of the implementing process.
