By this notice we wish to bring to the kind attention of the general public to the following facts as published in the Government Gazette Extraordinary No. 1619/24 of 18.09.2009, which is an amendment to Government Gazette Extraordinary No. 1467/15 of 17.10.2006, pertaining to the provision of accessibility facilities to persons with disabilities.
All new buildings that are being constructed should contain accessibility facilities for persons with disabilities, while all public buildings, common places and facilities should be provided with accessibility facilities before 16.10.2014.
Although seven years have elapsed after regulations on accessibility facilities have been issued, it has been reported that such buildings are still being constructed without accessibility facilities and that such accessibility facilities are provided in only a small proportion of already constructed buildings.
In terms of the Supreme Court decision in Case No. F.R.221/2209 of 17.06.2013, it is required that private sector buildings, common services and places as well, should be constructed to contain accessibility facilities.
Steps as appropriate should therefore be taken by all those concerned to provide accessibility facilities in all buildings, both public and private, common places, and services, before16.10.2014, as required by the Supreme Court decisions and as published in the Government Gazettes aforementioned.
Therefore, kindly be informed that legal action will be instituted against buildings, both government and private, common places and services, that have already been built/maintained, but do not conform to directions of the Supreme Court decisions and as contained in the government Gazettes mentioned, relating to provision of accessibility facilities by16.10.2014.
