Preamble

In 2005 on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka granted the degree awarding status to the National Institute of Social Development for the purpose of developing higher education leading to the conferment of the Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Subsequently, the Master's Degree programme in Social Work was also approved and gazetted in 2008. The National Institute of Social Development is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a degree awarding Institute, under section 25A of the Universities Act No.16 of 1978. It functions under the purview of the Ministry of Social Empowerment. It is the premier institution in Social Work education in Sri Lanka producing professional social workers to serve the social welfare system and to promote social development. This Institute operates under the provisions of the National Institute of Social Development ACT No.41 of 1992
